Little gesture, world of pleasure…

It’s been quite a week again.

Besides our regular extra curricular activities, we also had to judge students in the English Speech Contest. Ellie, Kate and I had to ask students questions on their topics and we had to ask them a general question. Next to that we also had to judge them on their prepared speech, the answers to our questions and their impromptu speech. It was very interesting to hear the outcome of the final marks of which we mostly hadn’t a clue how they were added up. The final outcome of the winner was even more surprising! Now, we are also expected on the next speech contest which will be held on Wednesday 22 November. We haven’t got a clue yet what they expect us to do there….Just judging or also questioning and perhaps commenting??? I’ll let you know. I also owe you a picture of Yu Wen Hai, who hosted the evening. His outfit was amazingly stunning, but unfortunately I haven’t got that picture yet. Something you can look forward to!

My students also never seize to amaze me. This week they just bluntly TOLD me, that they wanted to come to my flat to watch movies!!! Yeah, right……In their dreams perhaps. Inspite of my direct answer to them, I still forgot to ask them if they tell their Chinese teachers the same thing. I bet not! So, not only to they kind of demand to know where you live, but also to come by and watch movies as well as wanting your telephone number, so they can call when they have a question. I’ve got over 300 students…………..!!!! What are they thinking? When I explain though, they do understand and most of the time they really mean well. Ofcourse there are students to which I take a liking and who will visit my house every so often, but on my terms. What really pained me this week, is seeing how bad eye sight all the students seem to have. Most of you know my handwriting, it’s big, on the blackboard it’s HUGE and they still cannot read it! No, I do not teach in a really, really big classroom; and I can easily read it when I’m in the back of the class. I check it every now and then. They all just have really bad eyesight, all of them. Most wear glasses, some even share glasses, but still I see them with their eyes squeezed to try and read what’s on the BB. I wonder whether it’s a lack of nutrition, or something like that? For the ones who do have glasses….. I wonder if the optometrist does his job properly. I’ve heard stories……

Oh, that reminds me….Today, as we came back from one of our wonderful hikes again, we saw a dentist at work outside, on the street. I call him a dentist, as he was working on somebody’s teeth and the tools that were spread around him looked like a dentist’s tools, but the way he worked on the man’s teeth was what most surprised us. They both just sat on a stool, the tools laid out on a blanket and the old man that was being ‘worked on’, still had his cigarette dangling from his lips!! It was too much to take a picture of it, but it would have been a unique shot.

Talking of pictures…Those of you who read my blog regularly have probably seen the pictures of the ‘noodle ladies’. I had those printed out, and today I went back to give’m to them. I wish I could have filmed the reactions from all the market people, it was hilarious! They all had so much fun, the pictures were shown all over the market, and we were smiled and pointed at constantly. Kate needed some ‘greens’, but when she wanted to pay she didn’t have to, just because of the photos!! It weren’t even photo’s of the veggie woman…. Guess we have to take pictures of all of them, have them printed and hand them out and we will never have to pay for our groceries and noodles again! Hahahahaha. No, just kidding. But it was wonderful to see that a little gesture can bring a world of pleasure to so many people.

Perhaps if we all did that a little more often………

    Hoi Marlies,

Sinterklaas is vandaag in Nederland aangekomen.
    Groetjes Lonny

    He Marlies,
